Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide, including in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, managing diabetes and preventing its complications are major public health challenges. The objective of this study was to identify prognostic factors for survival among 331 patients with type 2 diabetes treated at the Mont Amba Hospital Centre of the University of Kinshasa, in the Lembe Health Zone, from 2015 to 2024. This was a retrospective quantitative study using survival analysis methods such as Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank tests and multivariate Cox analysis. Data were collected from the files and records of diabetic patients. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25 and STATA 16 software. Several factors significantly influence the survival of type 2 diabetics: male gender (HRa 5.93; 95% CI [2.49-14.09], p=0.000), insulin treatment (HRa 10.12; 95% CI [1.28-80.01], p=0.028), attendance at appointments (HRa 6.4; 95% CI [2.77-14.76], p=0.000). Complications from hypertension (HRa 5.08; 95% CI [2.005–12.887], p=0.001), complications of renal failure (HRa 13.11; 95% CI [3.611–47.597], p=0.000), blood glucose level (HRa 6.53; 95% CI [1.382-30.914], p=0.018) and body mass index (HRa 1.09; 95% CI [1.01-1.18], p=0.020). Taking these factors into account will contribute to the implementation of interventions aimed at significantly reducing mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes.
