Abstract

The study conducted at the BWELE farm in the Lukamba sector examines the influence of feed quality on the reproductive performance of cattle. The main objective is to improve the fertility, productivity, and profitability of livestock farming by identifying the nutritional factors that determine the herd's reproductive yield. Data collected from three kraals (districts) reveal significant disparities in the quality of the administered rations, which are directly reflected in the observed reproductive parameters. The study shows that cattle receiving a balanced diet, including green forage, mineral supplements, and sufficient energy intake, exhibit better performance. These animals have shorter calving intervals, higher conception rates, and a notable reduction in reproductive disorders such as anestrus or growth retardation. Conversely, cattle from kraals where feed quality is insufficient exhibit decreased fertility, a longer reproductive cycle, and increased vulnerability to diseases related to nutritional deficiencies. The study also highlights the constraints faced by the BWELE farm, including the seasonal variability of forage and the lack of a structured feed management program. It is recommended to strengthen nutritional practices through forage cultivation, the use of fortified feeds, and regular livestock monitoring. In conclusion, the sustainable improvement of bovine reproduction absolutely requires quality feed to increase herd fertility and profitability. Particular attention should be paid to kraal H, where nutritional deficiencies are most pronounced.
